G’day All
Do you know, it’s only 10 days to our Entertainment Afternoon with Stephanie and Mark Renouf. They will be terrific, but you also get a lovely afternoon tea, organized by Dianne and Joan. Couldn’t be better!! Get your names on the list in the hall way so that you don’t miss out. I’ve attached the flyers again as a reminder.

G’day All
We’ve had about half of our members renew their membership for another year. But we also have about 170 members who have not renewed their membership yet I need to remind you that there is just 15 more days to 30th June. After that date you will not be a member of the Club any more so you won’t be eligible to attend any Club activity after that date. Do please get you membership fees I straight away so we can get back to enjoying all our activities.

G’day All
We had a lecture on Elders Rights booked for today, but it was cancelled 10 days ago. I sent the e-mail advising the cancellation last Tuesday the 9th June – it’s listed below. It may be in your junk mail, or, I could have pushed the wrong button – that does happen – I have been known to send e-mails to myself, and wonder why I didn’t get a reply!! I do apologize for the confusion this has caused.
So, whilst I have you all here, the Genealogy lecture booked for the 20th July is also cancelled. We have a couple of points we need to fix up so we can present these lectures without any further confusion arising.

This is all about our AGM. It will be at the Dorset Gardens Hotel as usual, on Monday 13th July - Meal at Midday AGM at 1pm – all the details are on the Activities Page. Every position on the Committee is open and new faces are most welcome. We do need – in particular – a new President and a new Secretary, Dianne and I are stepping back a bit. We both hope to be on the new Committee, but, in slightly different roles. So, do put your hand up for any job, we both plan to be around to help, and give advice.
Please note that you must be a financial member to attend the lunch and AGM – that means for the year 2026-2027.

Yesterday I sent a query about running an Intro to genealogical searches.
Well, we seem to have quite a bit of interest, so it will run on Monday 20th July at 10AM. It will cost you $2, whether you have a cuppa, or not, as there is some expense to organizing this. So put your names on the list in the hallway and pay the $2 when you come to the Lecture.

G’day All
We’ve had an offer from a Genealogical group in Backburn to run a talk on “Introduction to Genealogy”
Now, I’m not all that fussed about knowing what my ancestors did, but, I wonder if any of you would be interested. Please send me an e-mail back if you think this would be of interest to you so we can decide whether to run it, or not. It would be on Monday 20th July at 9.30am. Do please answer this straight away.

Do you remember last year when Stephanie and Mark Renouf came, with their portable piano, and entertained us for a non stop hour of music and songs? I think they were terrific, so I’ve invited them back. They will be at the Club on Saturday 27th June from 1.30pm onwards. Get your names down on the list in the hall way and pay your $5 for a great afternoon. Check the Activities Page for more details.

G’day All
Janette has a really interesting presentation lined up for us on Monday 15th June at 9.30am. Siobhan, from Seniors Rights Australia will give us information about Seniors Rights, and about the Older Persons Advocacy Network. AND also about the MYGOV Support at Home Programme. Now that’s a lot of information, but probably the sort of information which will be very helpful to us all.

G’day All
If you check out the Gallery Page on our website you will see all these photos of people eating! Doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But for the 66 members who came to the luncheon at the Manhattan Hotel yesterday (Monday) it was really nice. The Club subsidized the lunch by a considerable amount so it was CHEAP as well as really good. The food there is always fresh and tasty, with a big variety. It’s advertised as a Seafood meal, but that’s only a small part – there’s Asian, Italian, even good old Aussie Roasts. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and no one was in a hurry to leave, there were lots of groups just chatting away. Another nice Club day.

NEWSLETTTER MAY 2026
G’day All
It must be time for a newsletter since the last one was in February – I just can't believe how fast the months go past!
You know, Dianne and I have been in the club for 21 years, and I thought that the 50th Anniversary afternoon tea was the nicest day I’ve ever had at the Cub. I couldn’t do anything as I had a crook foot, so all the Committee, plus an extra group of members pitched in and helped run the day, and everyone helped to clean up. It was just a nice happy day with lots of conversation and good food (thanks Dianne).
I would like to thank everyone for the cards and kind messages I have received since I injured my foot. They made me feel much better.
It felt good to know that the donation we made to Blaze Aid was so much appreciated, and to also be told exactly how they are going to use our money. There is a link to the letter on our Web page under “News” on 28th April 2026.
We are still going along nicely with about 13 activities each week. I have asked Council to knock out the wall between the Board Room and the old storeroom to make more room for our cards and mahjong players. They have agreed and are drawing up plans for it, it will be at our expense, but that’s ok, as we had budgeted for it. We just need to get them to get overhead shelves built in the new storeroom so we can clear the old store room out. And, one day they will finish the verandah so we can put furniture out there and put it to use. (I reckon that will be a next summer thing!).
We are still giving money back to our members in a timely fashion. We have had four free sessions during the last year, and all of our trips, entertainment, and luncheons are heavily subsidized. Our activity fees remain really cheap. (Dianne has organized a subsidized luncheon at the Manhattan – check out the details on her section of this newsletter).
We do have to balance these with the need to allow for maintenance and unexpected costs, to ensure we keep the Club in the financially viable position that it is in now.
Keep in mind that the end of the financial year is close. Do, please pay your annual fees of $10 now. Also, keep in mind that our AGM will be on Monday 13th July at 1PM (Not sure where yet, we’re looking at a couple of options).
One of the actions at an AGM is to elect a new Committee to look after the Club for the following year, so every position from President through to ordinary Committee members are declared vacant. This is your chance to come on the Committee, put forward your ideas, and help keep the Club running. New ideas are essential to keep the Club up to date and relevant.
I will not be standing as President this year, I’ve been on the Committee for 18 years – including 12 years as Treasurer, and the past 4 as President. I’ve really enjoyed my time but, as I keep saying, every job needs a fresh face, and I think my face is wearing out!
I will stand for the Committee so hopefully, I will be allowed to send out gossipy e-mails still. Dianne will not be standing for Secretary this time, although I believe she hopes to keep on with her Membership and Social Secretary roles.
Well, that’s about it for me, read on for Dianne’s part.
MEMBERSHIP
The Annual fees of $10 are due by no later than 30th June. With so many members I would appreciate early payment. Receipts will be posted on the notice board under membership. Please write your full name and any changes to address, email or phone number along with your $10 in an envelope and put in white mailbox in passage.
Thanks
Our membership is still growing with 401 current members. To all our new members I hope you are enjoying all we have to offer. Also our older members, hope you still enjoy it. During our 50th Anniversary preparations I checked out our longest memberships, and here are the numbers:
2 at 27 years, 3 at 22 years, 7 at 21 years, 4 at 20 years, 2 at 19 years, 2 at 18 years, 2 at 17 years, 8 at 15 years, 4 at 14 years, 3 at 13 years, 14 at 12 years, 9 at 11 years, 8 at 10 years 333 under 10 years. Not bad figures. We must be doing something right. We hope everyone is keeping well, if you are unwell we wish you a speedy recovery.
ACTIVITIES.
Our next extra activity is a lunch at the Manhatten Hotel, on Monday 25th May. The club is heavily subsidising this. Cost to members will be $15. Please put your money in an envelope with your name and activity on it and put it in white mailbox in passage.
The Renouf duo will be back to entertain us on Sat 27th June, time to be advised, followed by afternoon tea. Cost $5. The brochure will go up early June. Once again put your money in an envelope with your full name and what activity you are paying for, and put in white box in passageway.
Our JULY activity is our AGM and lunch which will be held on Monday 13th July. Please keep this date free, and come along. More details will be available next month.
I haven’t booked a bus trip because of the fuel shortage, and the surcharge the bus company have added to the cost of hiring the bus. Also, as I may not be doing activities next month, it will be up to someone else to arrange, if anyone wants to give it a try. Arranging the extra activities, although a bit of work involved is a lot of fun, and knowing members enjoy them is very satisfying.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the activities I run. A big thank you to Joan Craig who helps me with afternoon teas as well as other jobs that need doing. Also, thanks to all the members who help pack up after concerts, or help with morning teas on the bus trips. Talking about bus trips, you, the members, make things run so smoothly by always being where you are supposed to be on time, so thank you.
I would like to say that I won’t be standing as secretary again this year. I have had this role for 5 years. I took it on with all my other portfolio’s as the secretary at the time resigned and nobody would put their hand up. I was only going to do it for that year, and 5 years on I am still doing it, I have really enjoyed the job. I would like to thank the committees I have worked with, and of course all you members for your support. Being on the committee you get to make good friends, and get to know a lot of people. I have thought about giving up my other roles on the committee, I do enjoy them, but if anybody else would like to give it a go I will stand aside and be happy to help if needed.
We would also like to say a special thank you to all the members who help out every day. The people who coordinate and set up for activities, eg Exercise, Bowls, Cards, Mahjong, Pa-Tuan-Chin, Table Tennis, Pool/Snooker, Dances, Dance programs, Dance tuition, Craft/Chat, Speakers, Walks, Bike rides. Prepare the kitchen for afternoon teas, and serve the drinks. They all take the time to set up so everyone can walk in and have things ready to go. Also thanks to the ones who clean up the kitchen after everyone has had afternoon tea, not forgetting the ones who put chairs, bowls mats, table tennis tables away. The list goes on and on. (Sorry if we have forgotten anyone, or group). Your help is appreciated, and it is what makes our club so good. Everyone can do a bit to help. Many hands make light work. Please take the time to thank the people in your activity who do, do these things to make your day enjoyable, a thank you goes a long way. Or better still come a little bit early and help out.
It would be remiss of us not to mention the fabulous job Cliff does with our website, if you haven’t looked at it, take the time to check it out. Cliff keeps it updated with the latest goings on at the club, including photos. Great work Cliff, Thanks.

If you want to attend, please turn up about 2.15pm so you don’t disturb the Exercise class that concludes at 2pm.

G’day All again
There will be no bus trip in May due to the fuel price uncertainties. But they will be on again later in the year.
We have decided to have another Manhattan Seafood Luncheon instead. It’s on Monday 25th May, and will cost you just $15. Don’t forget it’s for members only. All the details are on the flyer attached.
Now, if you’re going to the Glad Physio lecture at the hall on that morning, you will still have time to go to the luncheon if you want to as the Manhattan is only 10 minutes away.

I’ve attached a flyer about a Mens Health Programme that Maroondah Council are running in June. It looks really interesting. The flyer explains it and also how to apply for a spot.

This is the final call to remind you of our fashion Parade on Saturday 9th May (sounds like a call to board a plane doesn’t it). Have your names and money in by Wednesday 6th March – don’t forget to bring a friend if you wish. Dianne tells me I have to look after the wine!! I wonder if she means I have to drink it??

What an absolutely lovely streak of weather we are having. It makes me feel good just being in the sun. We have another reason to feel good. You may remember that we scaled back our 50th Anniversary celebrations so that we could send $10,000 to Blaze Aid to help getting farm fences back up after the fires earlier this year. Blaze Aid have sent a lovely letter of thanks and a certificate. Click here to read the letter, and both the letter and certificate will go up on our notice board today.

Don’t forget that Dianne has a fashion show organized for Saturday 9th May at 1.30pm. The clothes will be provided by U and I designs, and the models on the cat walk are from our very own members. Because Mothers Day is the next day we thought it would be nice if members could bring their daughters – or a friend - to the Parade. We will provide a glass of sparkling wine, or soft drink, and a light afternoon tea for everyone. Do put your names on the list – it’s just $5 per person.

This is a reminder about the EACH presentation on Monday 27th April at 9.30am. It should be very interesting as they will give information about State and Federal assistance that we, as Seniors, can receive.
It’s going to be in the main hall, so there will be lots of room. So, just turn up and we will get more chairs out (we have 90 chairs). I know we have 25 people going already. If you’re going to stay for a cuppa after wards you can drop $2 into a container on the kitchen bench, otherwise, it’s no charge.

G’day All
Well, Dianne and I had a big sleep in yesterday after our busy Saturday. We had our flash afternoon tea for our 50th Anniversary. It was terrific!!
There was 120 members, the Mayor of Maroondah – Cr Linda Hancock – and a nice young bloke called Daniel Hearn – he’s our contact with the Maroondah Council. The weather was not too wet and everyone worked out the parking. It was fairly casual, we just put tables and chairs around the hall in a random pattern, and everyone just moved them around to suit. The glass of sparkling wine at the beginning was nice. We used our three tiered plates along the main tables, together with our nice matching crockery, and they all added to they all looked good .The food was great – we had scones with jam and cream, sandwiches, little pies, and quiches - we even had sushi, together with some fruit and cheese platters. Then there lots of slices of all types. So, plenty of food and lots of chatter and laughter.
We let people in earlier than planned – 1pm as it was quite cold, then at about 2:15pm. I gave a history of the Club over the last 50 years. Actually I will write it down during the next couple of days so anyone can read it if they’re interested. The Mayor cut the cake and offered a toast to the Club, and everyone got back to enjoying themselves. Mandy Savona enjoyed herself more than most as she won the $50 door prize!
It was all over by 3.30pm, just about everyone went by that time. I do need to acknowledge some people. Dianne planned the menu ,and bought lots of things that were needed to run the day. The afternoon prior, every single committee member turned out to help with all the set up. Then, on the Saturday they were all there again to make it run successfully, and do the pack up, which was, really, the hardest part. I also thank all the other members who helped pack up all the chairs and tables and helped with the kitchen clean up. It was great to see so many people pitch in to help. I also thank EPR for lending us their chairs so we could all sit down if we wanted. It was super day!!

We have a very interesting lecture happening on Monday 27th April at 9.30 am.
We will have three EACH presenters to talk about - help available to keep living at home from both State and Federal Governments. It should be most interesting. More details are on the flyer attached. There is a list up on the hall notice board now.

G’day All
I hope those of you with your names down for our 50th Anniversary afternoon tea, are looking forward to it.
We do have quite a lot of people coming, so we will be very short of parking spaces – there is approximately 80 spaces around the Club, but that won’t be enough.
You can park in Warrandyte Rd as well, but I really recommend that you car pool where possible – even if you find a quiet lane somewhere close where you can park a couple of cars and just bring one to the Club.
Do Not Come Early. We will have the hall set up, so there will be nowhere for you to wait. It’s supposed to start at 1.30pm. I reckon we will probably open the door at about 1.15pm.
Regards Keith

I hope you’re all enjoying Easter – I’m sitting in hospital with an infected foot, so I am grumpier than usual (just ask Dianne, she will confirm that)!
Anyway, our 50th Anniversary celebrations commence this Monday the 6th April. So, there are no activity charges for any activity from Monday 6th April to Sunday 19th April inclusive.
For those of you coming to our afternoon tea next Saturday 11th April, I will send out more details during the week. Do please note that only the people with names on the list will be able to attend as we have a large attendance list.

Do you know that yesterday – Monday – was Ballarat’s dryest day on record?? – Well that was between 9am to 10am, then the rains came back!!
Our bus trip – with 46 members - going to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens to have a look at the Begonias was eventful. It started off with bus arriving 20 minutes late because of traffic congestion, then there was no hot water on the bus for our morning tea, then it started raining before we got to Ballarat. However, we made up a little time on the trip, the bus company organized a hot water urn to be delivered to us at Ballarat, and the rain was really only a misty drizzle for the morning. So it ended up being a really nice day.
The Begonia display is absolutely magnificent – Cliff has put some of our photos onto our website for you to have a look at – and the Gardens themselves are quite beautiful. The area around Lake Wendouree is lovely. We had about two hours at the gardens then we walked across the road to Pipers Café for lunch. We had pre-ordered our meals and the café staff were very efficient, so lunch was really enjoyable. On the way home the rain got heavier, so, instead of stopping for a break, Henry – our driver – let us serve the muffins and biscuits and cheese on board, so we all stayed dry. (Thank you to all our passengers for leaving the bus clean for Henry). We arrived back at the Club at 4.20pm after a beaut day.

Don’t forget the Eastern Volunteers presentation on Monday 23rd March at 9.30am. It’s all about the things they can help us all with, such as providing transportation to appointments and meetings, plus other activities they do as well. It’s on next Monday so do please call Janette on 0490 013 705 and put your name down.

The wheels are starting to grind forward for our 50th Afternoon Tea. I have a four items for this:–
-
If anyone has any club photos from the past, please let me know. We will put them up for everyone to see.
-
Cliff will take lots of photos (I hope – I’m sure he will – Are you there Cliff??). One particular one we will definitely take is of all our current - and previous Committee Members. We will do that somewhere around 2pm. So, if you have been on the Committee previously, come and get your photo taken.
-
It does seem as if we are going to have quite a crowd, and our car parking is quite limited for the numbers we have booked already. So, if it is at all possible, and convenient, please try to double up in your cars.
-
One last thing, the other thing the Committee has decided to do is have a two weeks free session, from Monday the 6th April and ending on Sunday the19th April – both dates inclusive. The 6th April is the actual birthday date for the Club.
